Chemistry is a massive scientific field (expressed among other things in the world’s largest index known as the Chemical Abstracts Service) not easily condensed in one or even multiple courses at any university. However, in order to convey a general perspective on the molecular world, the chemistry course at the Roosevelt Academy will attempt to do just that. Emphasis in this course is on the molecular aspects of chemistry, which will be worked out primarily in organic and bio-organic chemistry.
The factors that set (bio)organic chemistry apart from any other field in chemistry is the endless variety of structure (as a result of the characteristics of carbon), the centrality of resonance, and the emphasis on (reaction)mechanisms. These themes coalesce a bewildering array of facts and concepts into a unified science. A number of subjects will be dealt with:
