FAQ

How do I apply?

If you meet all the requirements for application and wish to apply for the next academic year you should do the following: first obtain an application form. This form can be downloaded directly from the Admissions section on this website. The application form should be filled out and sent to Roosevelt Academy, accompanied by a letter of motivation written by you in English. It should also include a letter of recommendation from your high school counselor, decaan, or other mentor/teacher, and a grade list with your most recent grades. Once we have received this information we will contact you by regular mail, phone or e-mail to let you know the final decision by the Board of Studies. They can choose to invite you for an interview or they can decide to decline your application.

If I am invited for an interview, what can I expect?

When you are invited for an interview the Board of Studies considers you a possible candidate based on the application papers you have sent in. It is important to find out whether you are right for Roosevelt Academy, and whether Roosevelt Academy is right for you. The interview will focus on finding out more about you, and what you are passionate about or interested in. It goes without saying that if you are well-prepared it will make a good impression on the person(s) you are talking to. You are also welcome to ask questions yourself during the interview. Each interview will be held in English, as this is the official language at Roosevelt Academy. After the interview the Board of Studies will discuss your case. Once their decision has been made you will receive a letter from them stating whether you have been accepted or not.

Does RA charge an application fee?

Yes, Roosevelt Academy charges an application fee of EUR 50. Please check the applications form section for details. If you are invited to come and study at RA after the interview, you will be sent an invitation package. Your place at RA will only be guaranteed if you send back the acceptance form and pay the deposit of € 200 within the required two weeks. This deposit will be deducted from your tuition fee invoice which will be sent to you either in August or in December (depending on which semester you will start: Fall or Spring). Should you decide to cancel your application, please note that this deposit is non-refundable.

Is Roosevelt Academy a private institution?

No. RA is a university college of Utrecht University that offers an international Liberal Arts and Sciences undergraduate program. Students graduate with a degree awarded by Utrecht University.

What is the tuition fee at Roosevelt Academy?

The tuition is set by the government each year. For the academic year 2010-2011, the tuition fee is € 1672. This is the only direct payment a student must make to Roosevelt Academy. However, one should keep in mind that there are a variety of additional payments, including housing fee, books, visa, health insurance, etc. It is the student's responsibility to have sufficient funds to cover these costs. Currently, the Dutch government estimates an international student needs approximately € 15,000 for one year of study in the Netherlands.

Can I receive Studiefinanciering?

Yes, Roosevelt Academy is part of Utrecht University. It is not a private college, and Dutch students therefore qualify for Studiefinanciering and an OV card. Students from some EU/EER countries can qualify for a tuition fee reimbursement from the IB-Group. Please check the IBG website for further information: http://www.ib-groep.nl/particulier/index.asp

How long in advance would you recommend a student should start applying for Roosevelt Academy?

Depending on the nationality of the student we recommend beginning anywhere from 3-6 months in advance. Students with an EU/EER nationality will suffice with a 3 month period. Other countries such as African and Asian countries, or Latin American countries, may need up to 6 months. Due to the time it takes to arrange an entry visa for students from some countries, 6 months will be needed to complete the process in time. It is always advisable to begin as early as possible.

Is it mandatory for students to live in Middelburg?

All Roosevelt Academy students are required to live on campus which is located in various locations in the inner-city of Middelburg. If a student is accepted at Roosevelt Academy a student room on campus is provided for the full three years a student will be studying at RA. We feel that it would not be beneficial to a student’s academic achievements if they do not actively participate in the Roosevelt Academy community. To enhance this we require the students to live on campus. This is not included in the tuition fee; rent, including gas, water, and internet is approximately €300 per month.

Can I start in the Spring semester?

A student can begin in the Spring or Fall semester. Since most students will begin in the Fall semester every year, fewer spaces are available in the Spring semester.
