Profile
Mark Janse (1959) is Full (visiting) Professor of Linguistics & Classics and former Head of the Department of Arts & Humanities at Roosevelt Academy. He studied Classics (1981, magna cum laude), Hebrew (1983, summa cum laude) and Linguistics (1985, summa cum laude) at Ghent University, where he also obtained his Ph.D. degree in Greek & Latin Language & Linguistics with a dissertation on the history of Greek and Latin clitic placement (1995, summa cum laude, with the special congratulations of the Ph.D. committee). His research on Ancient Greek has earned him (visiting) professorships at Ghent University (1996-2004), the University of Amsterdam (2003-2004) and the Ohio State University (2004). His pioneering work on Cappadocian (Asia Minor Greek) was supported by grants from the Fund for Scientif Research-Flanders and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. It has earned him an associate professorship at the University of Patras (from 2005), visiting fellowships at the University of Amsterdam (2002-2003), Ghent University (from 2005) and All Souls College, Oxford (Michaelmas term 2007). He has given invited lectures and seminars on Cappadocian at the universities of Amsterdam, Athens, Cambridge, Crete, Leiden, Louvain, Manchester, Nancy, Naples, Oxford, Paris, Rome, Thessaloniki and Utrecht.
Mark Janse has published more than sixty scholarly articles and thirty books on Ancient, Biblical, Byzantine & Modern Greek, Cappadocian, Pontic, Turkish, Hebrew, Latin and general linguistics. His latest work is almost entirely devoted to Cappadocian, a Greek-Turkish mixed language thought to have died out in the 1960s. His recent discovery of Capppadocian speakers received much attention in the media. He is founder and co-ordinator of a large international academic network on minority languages in Greece and Turkey, and co-founder and permanent member of the organizing and scientific committee of the international conferences on Modern Greek Dialects and Linguistic Theory. He is international advisory editor of Journal of Greek Linguistics, member of the the Foundation for Endangered Languages and the Society for Modern Greek Dialectology of the Academy of Athens, Corresponding Member of the Center for Asia Minor Studies (Athens) and the Center for Cappadocian Research (Kavala).
Apart from being a philologist, glossologist, hellenist, philhellene and (according to some) a zïrzïrï Kappadokis, Mark Janse is also a devoted Zappaphile and an acknowledged Zappalogist. He is author of the infamous Motherese-series published in the 1990s in the Dutch fanzine The Black Page, in which are revealed some of the more exotic intricacies of the multifaceted oeuvre of Frank Zappa. He is winner of the 1990 Advanced Frank Zappa Contest and owner of the accompanying prize (being a cheesy T-shirt he had already purchased at the entrance). Time permitting, he likes to indulge in cooking with a distinct preference for Mediterranean, South & Southeast Asian and (Con)fusion cuisines. Some of his dishes are reported to be unduly spicy. He is a sponsor of the Tanqueray Foundation.
