The Greek art and archaeology course outlines ancient Greek culture from prehistory until late Antiquity. The objective of the course is twofold. First is an overview of ancient Greek art in the period described above, offering the proper framework to assess, categorise and date archaeological material and to determine stylistic characteristics of ancient Greek artefacts and monuments. Second is the relation between this art-historical and archaeological development on the one hand, and the historical and cultural setting of the relevant period on the other, and gain insight in the influence of historical events and culture in general on art and artefacts.
For this purpose, a concise introduction to ancient Greek art will be offered in Middelburg and Amsterdam. The main stylistic developments will be discussed against their historical background. In Greece, a number of key sites will be visited in the region roughly between Athens and Olympia in the south and Delphi in the north. On each site, students will give presentations on particular subjects. The remainder of the site will be discussed by the instructors.
