Profile
Born in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Terneuzen), Jaap Hanekamp has found his way back, in more than one way, to his home turf by joining Roosevelt Academy to teach chemistry. He received his Ph.D. in this field in 1992 from the Chemistry and Medical Faculties of Utrecht University. In 1994, he left with his wife and soon to be born son for the United States to join the University of California-Riverside as a post-doc.
After returning to the Netherlands in 1995, chemistry was traded in for a job in which science, policymaking, and societal issues were at the center of his interest. Risk analysis of different issues such as pesticides exposure, environmental soil quality, food safety were (and still are) frequently on his plate. He published numerous scientific articles on these and other issues, but also added to the public debate by op-eds in different (inter)national and regional newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal, the Financieel Dagblad, NRC Handelsblad and the like. Moreover, between 1996 and 2000, he and his wife were foster parents to a total of nine teenagers.
Precautionary culture proved to be a recurrent theme in all his scientific work, and since 2006, he has been working on a Ph.D. thesis within the fields of theology and philosophy. Apart from his work at Roosevelt Academy, he runs his own (small) company in which he conducts scientific research for third-party contractors.
