SCI 322 Advanced Chemistry
Content
Science 322 builds and extends on Science 125. Chemistry is now looked at more at a detailed level, in which molecular characterisations with analytical technology is one of its focuses. Emphasis again is on the molecular aspects of chemistry. A number of books will be used of which Organic Chemistry A Biological Approach by McMurry is maintained from the SCI125 course. In order to follow this course, therefore, the 100-level course in chemistry is obligatory. Topics in this course are, amongst others:
- Molecular Orbital theory (pericyclic reaction examples)
- Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion theory
- Chemical Reactions and its mechanisms
- Reaction rates and equilibriums
- Thermodynamics (basics; applied in biochemistry)
- Stereochemistry
- Co-ordination chemistry (basics)
- Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and interpretation of 13C and 1H spectra
- Mass spectrometry
