SCI 322 Advanced Chemistry

Content

Science 322 builds and extends on Science 125. Chemistry is now looked at more at a detailed level, in which molecular characterisations with analytical technology is one of its focuses. Emphasis again is on the molecular aspects of chemistry. A number of books will be used of which Organic Chemistry A Biological Approach by McMurry is maintained from the SCI125 course. In order to follow this course, therefore, the 100-level course in chemistry is obligatory. Topics in this course are, amongst others:

  • Molecular Orbital theory (pericyclic reaction examples)
  • Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion theory
  • Chemical Reactions and its mechanisms
  • Reaction rates and equilibriums
  • Thermodynamics (basics; applied in biochemistry)
  • Stereochemistry
  • Co-ordination chemistry (basics)
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and interpretation of 13C and 1H spectra
  • Mass spectrometry
