Electric and magnetic forces are of major importance in this world. All phenomena in chemistry and biology, and most phenomena in physics, are due to electromagnetic forces. In fact, all forces in the universe are electromagnetic, except for gravity and the forces within nuclei of atoms. Classical electrodynamics reached its full formulation near the end of the nineteenth century. At the core of this are Maxwell’s laws, which state all the relevant dynamical relationships connecting electric and magnetic fields with both their sources and each other. It is one of the most profound achievements of the nineteenth century and its technological applications have dramatically altered the face of the world. This course not only highlights the unification the physics of magnetism, electricity and light, we will also demonstrate the close connection between electromagnetism and Einstein’s theory of special relativity.
