Research Projects
The Politics and Policies of Food and Fat
This project consists of an examination of the public policy dimensions that are associated with food production and consumption in modern Western societies. These topics are examined within the context of the 300-level course Public Policy Analysis. In the Spring 2008 semester students examined the problem of obesity and overweight from a public policy angle. Their research papers have been collected in an edited volume which can be downloaded here. In the spring of 2009 the class examined the broader issue of the environmental, ethical and economic aspects of the modern industrialized ways of producing, processing and selling food, drawing inspiration from Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma and Marion Nestle’s Food Politics. In the Spring of 2010 the course will most likely focus on the future of fish. These projects are an example of RA’s commitment to engage students in undergraduate research: ‘An inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline’ (Council on Undergraduate Research, 2008).
