SSC 349 Namibia Field Practicum

Content

The Namibia Field Practicum offers advanced social science students the opportunity to undertake supervised, field-based learning in Namibia, Southern Africa. More specifically, students gain practical research experience in the fields of socio-cultural anthropology and/or international development. Revolving around a 4-week summer field trip, students work together with local organizations and institutions while undertaking supervised social scientific research on a pre-approved (and pre-designed) topic. The current research theme is Negotiating Youth and Modernity in Northwest Namibia. The four sub-themes comprise studies of Namibian youth in their relation to a) tourism; b) the urban/rural divide; c) the economy; and d) politics.

Acknowledgements: This special course is being carried out in partnership with the Opuwo Town Council in Namibia. Evides, Roosevelt Academy, the Department of Social Science, and the participating students themselves contributed the additional costs associated with the program.

N.B. This course is offered on an intermittent basis only. It will be offered again in Summer 2011.
